The No-Happy-Medium Rule for New Leaders?

Happy Mediums don’t work! Let me tell you why.

I get asked this questions quite a bit when I speak at conferences. I was recent;y presenting at a conference in Anchorage, Alaska when a session participant asked:

“How do I create a happy medium as a new leader?

My answer:YOU DON’T. THEY DON’T EMPOWER YOU TO LEAD AUTHENTICALLY.

Besides, cars in the middle of the road get swiped on both sides!

On the other hand, here’s what you can do:

  1. Develop a personal leadership strategy based on your values.

  2. Share it, and ask your team how can they add to it. You may even want to sponsor a lunch.

  3. Welcome the firing squad to pick it apart, but only if they’re going to provide alternatives.

  4. Create a realistic time-table for implementation. Change is tough, but possible. Ever been on a diet?

  5. Trust yourself to hold the team accountable, and trust the team to operationalize. Tweak where necessary.

  6. Repeat.

This is a phenomenal cycle of success when new leaders allow themselves to be patient enough to see it crystallized. Forming alliances and influencing the team is your fundamental expectation as a leader. Learn your C.O.R.E. (Consistencies, Opportunities, Resilience, Enthusiasm) and watch your strategy soar. Or continue to flounder in happy medium world.
