It causes you to be:
defensive, judgemental, and untrusting. Thus, making you the biggest micromanager you never wanted to become. Here a a few proven techniques to eradicate Leader FOMO:
1. Groom Experts. The job of a new leader is to be the new giraffe in town and see long term. Then, bring your team into that vision with training, coaching, and action. Repeat.
2. Develop yourself. Focus on taking your skill set and behaviors higher.
3. Champion Innovation. Integrate “different” ideas into your success. Discomfort is sometimes necessary or grow.
4. Understand Values. Knowing the uber important “why’s” for everyone on your team is essential to becoming the leader you are destined to be. Find ways to know what makes the people you lead tick. Find those, and you have resolved the retention issue once and for all.
It’s easy to slip into the manager who has to have his fingers in every detail of every thought of every team member- that’s too much work! Instead, learn to lead authentically, using these four principles.
